Alternative Root Zone Management (Handshake): Handshake acts as a proof-of-concept for replacing or supplementing ICANN’s root servers. It allows anyone to bid on, own, and manage custom Top-Level Domains (TLDs) on a peer-to-peer blockchain without needing an intermediate registrar.
Multi-Chain TLD Registries (Freename):Platforms like Freename let users mint and commercialize custom TLD extensions directly across chains like Polygon and BNB Chain, treating extensions as user-owned digital assets.
Decentralized Identity Standards (W3C DIDs & ENS): The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has established formal standards for Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs), while networks like the Ethereum Name Service (ENS) have proven that millions of users will adopt native naming layers if they are deeply integrated into wallets, apps, and crypto infrastructure.
While a unified, global rollout plan backed by traditional institutions does not exist, the technological scaffolding—from custom app-chains and decentralized resolution networks to cryptographic key ownership—is actively running in production across the Web3 ecosystem.
